Aurora, CO

Aurora Colorado is the largest city in this beautiful state! Because of that they have a big job in providing safe water for the residence. Most all homes in Aurora have a city water supply and maybe about 1% are wells. This is always interesting for me as there are more challenges in treating the different types of water. We must always treat well water differently then city water. Removing the iron in the well water is the biggest problem.

Water softeners are still the number one water treatment systems installed in Aurora as they work great for both well water as well as city water. As I always say, if you have city water you should always have a whole house carbon tank for removal of poison gas from the water. Aurora, like many Colorado cities, use a chlorine and ammonium mixture to make chloramine. This seams to be the disinfection method of choice for the front range. Since Aurora is so large they chose chloramine as it has a longer pipe life!

For the most part the city water in Aurora is pretty good.  Aurora gets their water from many sources. They use recycled water mixed with surface water and all recycled water has some or many pharmaceuticals in it.  As far as I can tell they do not add Fluoride to the water. The Fluoride you see on the city water report is a natural Fluoride and not the more harmful man made Fluoride and it is at a low level.

All city’s do a good job of managing the PH level and Aurora is no different.  Having a low PH would effect the city water distribution system in a negative way and that is one reason why they keep it above 7 PH.  Well water usually has low PH and that needs to be addressed. The average hardness level in Aurora Colorado is about 11 Grains-per-gallon, and that is just enough to be annoying and leave white spots on everything.
As with all city water supplies the City of Aroroa does add chloramine to the water. Chloramine is twice the poison as chlorine! Chloramine is a 50/50 mixture of bleach and ammonia. YUK!

Chloramine is a gas that is meant to disinfect the water supply do keep bacteria from growing in the water pipes. It is a poison and is designed to kill so in my opinion it should be taken out of the water supply for the whole house. I do not believe we should breath it, shower in it or drink it.

“Al Vanden Heuvel’s knowledge about water is second to none. I had him install a custom whole house water filter that works flawlessly. I have complete confidence that my filter protects my family due to Al’s passion and knowledge about water filtration. I have had systems by Rain Soft in the past. They were a lot more expensive and did not compare to the quality and performance of my Water Choices filter.”
