How Hard Is Colorado Water, Exactly?
Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) or parts per million (PPM). Anything above 7 GPG is considered hard. Anything above 10.5 GPG is very hard. Most of the Colorado Front Range sits comfortably in the "very hard" category — and has for as long as water utilities have been tracking it.

Where does all that hardness come from? Colorado's water travels through limestone, dolomite, and sandstone formations in the Rocky Mountains before it reaches your tap. Those rocks are rich in calcium and magnesium — the two minerals that define water hardness. By the time Front Range water reaches a household, it's picked up significant mineral load.
What Hard Water Actually Does (And Doesn't Do)

Hard water is not a health hazard. The calcium and magnesium in hard water are minerals your body needs. Is a Water Softener the Right Answer?
For most Front Range homeowners dealing with municipal water, yes — a whole-house water softener is the most direct solution to hardness. It removes calcium and magnesium through ion exchange, replacing them with sodium (at very low levels — less than adding a dash of salt to a glass of water).
