Which Salt Type Should You Use?

  • Rock salt contains impurities (iron, sediment) that can accumulate in the brine tank and require more frequent cleaning. It's the cheapest upfront but adds maintenance time.
  • Solar salt crystals are better than rock salt and work fine. Some softeners develop "mushing" (salt crystals clumping into a solid mass) with crystals in humid conditions — less common in Colorado's dry climate, but possible.
  • Evaporated pellets are the purest form and dissolve cleanly without leaving residue. They reduce brine tank cleanouts and keep the softener performing optimally. The extra cost is worth it for most homeowners.

Avoid "rust remover" or iron-treatment salts as your primary salt unless you're specifically dealing with iron in your water and your softener is designed for it — they contain additives (sodium hydrosulfite) that can damage some resin beds over time.

How to Know If Your Softener Is Using the Right Amount of Salt
